The Charleston Rose Obelisk is made from 3.15” (8 cm) steel tubing and 0.79” (2 cm) steel-bands. Hot-dip galvanised and powder coated black. Pinecone finial cast in aluminium. The Charleston Rose Obelisk must be firmly secured to the ground using a large steel anchor (provided) to be put into concrete. Made in one single piece. Romantic old roses will often grow impetuously in different directions and before long can start to look wild and unkempt. With the help of Classic Garden Elements’ distinctive Charleston Rose Obelisk, however, heavy shoots will retain their compact shape even when weighed down by numerous blooms. The diagonal steel bands of our sturdiest rose column will train the main shoots to grow slowly in an upward spiral, encouraging the growth of new, richly-budded side shoots. This rose-training technique was perfected in Charleston South Carolina at the beginning of the 19th century. At that time, the specially designed pillar was made of wood.
Charleston has a long tradition of rose-breeding. It was there that the first Noisette rose was born in 1802, when landowner and rose lover John Champney successfully crossed the Old Blush China Rose with the musk rose (rosa moschata). Champney called the new hybrid after his neighbour Philippe Noisette, a Frenchman and owner of one of Charleston’s rose nurseries. The Noisette Climbing Rose is vigorous and healthy. Smooth and almost thornless, the long, slender shoots carry clusters of delicately coloured blooms that hang romantically downwards. To help them flourish, they need a sturdy support.
Like many repeat-blooming climbing roses, most of which originated in the 19th century, Noisette roses and tea roses tend become quite large. They lend height and depth to a garden and add different perspectives. Since these climbing roses bloom on new shoots, it is important to prune them in springtime. The shoots should be trained to grow as horizontally as possible, which will speed the growth of even more flower-bearing shoots. To allow the shoots to grow in different directions, you can bend them gently. The various support options include walls and fences or pergolas and arches. And of course, you can also choose our tall and imposing Charleston Rose Obelisk as a sturdy and reliable support. The Charleston Rose Obelisk is available in two different versions, each with a different diameter and height. Both models must be anchored in concrete. We will be happy to offer our advice as you choose the best option for roses and or other plants in your garden.
