High-Class Metal Wall Trellis for Roses, Clematis and other Plants

The numerous metal wall trellises available on the market today may all seem similar at first sight. However, while many suppliers work with light aluminium profiles or thin untreated square tubing, we are committed to using only the best material. Like all our metal wall trellises, the Poundbury is a superior product made of high-quality massive wrought iron at our own manufacturing plant. We begin by welding together strong steel profiles and steel bands, which are then hot-dip galvanized to protect them from rust. The metal is then powder-coated to give it an additional layer of protection. Weighing several kilos, it is neither light nor flimsy, enabling it to support the heaviest of climbing plants. The high-quality materials used to manufacture the Poundbury are well matched by the quality of the design. A chequered frame of small squares surrounds larger squares in a chessboard pattern. Even when left unplanted, the Poundbury lends style and character to an otherwise dull façade, making it a picture of understated elegance.

Growing plants on wall trellises – A few tips

However attractive a wall trellis may be in its own right, it is only by planting it that we can add a touch of romance and give it the colour that turns it into a feast for the eyes. Roses, clematis, wisteria, honeysuckle and many other climbers can lend their special charm to our walls. If you are planting on south, south-east or south-west-facing walls, you can choose from a wide range of plants that benefit from exposure to sun, and in full bloom will form a most beautiful link between your house and your garden. Vigorous climbing roses in particular will appreciate the Poundbury’s stability. We recommend that you always attach the rose shoots to the front of the Poundbury trellis, and never allow them to grow in and out of the latticework. This will facilitate the radical pruning you will need to carry out after some years in order to keep the plants in bounds.

For planting the Poundbury, we recommend using perennial climbers, which can be planted both in spring (in April or May) and in autumn (before the first frost). It is always preferable to plant them directly in the ground rather than using flower pots or planters. Be prepared to change the soil when planting directly in front of the house in a paved surface, as underneath there is likely to be building rubble or gravel, which will stunt or hinder growth. For planting you will need a hole about 50 centimetres (20 inches) wide and deep. Covering the roots with mulch and planting small hardy perennials around the base of the stem will help to prevent water loss and promote growth.
