Il Porcellino (“The Piglet”) or “The Wild Boar” is the local Florentine nickname for a bronze fountain with a boar. The fountain figure was created by the Baroque master Pietro Tacca (1577- 1640) shortly before 1643. It was modelled on a Roman marble statue made of Pentelic marble dating back to the early imperial period (1st century AD). This in turn was modelled on a lost Greek bronze sculpture from the Middle Hellenistic period.
Visitors to Il Porcellino throw a coin into the boar’s gaping mouth to drop it through the grille below for good luck, and they rub the boar’s snout to ensure a return to Florence – a tradition noted by the Scottish traveller Tobias Smollett as early as 1766, which has preserved the snout in a state of polished lustre while the rest of the boar’s body is patinated to a dull brownish green.
The Roman work was found in an unknown location around the middle of the It was brought to Florence by the Medici family in the 16th century. Since then, it has been associated with the Calydonian boar from Greek mythology. It is on display in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The replica offered here is based on a plaster cast of the work in the Uffizi.
The animal figure is produced as a bronze cast using the traditional lost wax technique. The negative mould required for this is based on a plaster cast of the original in the Uffizi.
In addition to classic bronze casting, we also offer two other moulds for the animal figurines available to buy in our online shop. Marble casting from powdered genuine white marble. And the new moulding of the statue by sculptors from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.
Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of suitable patinas in advance.
