The sculptor of the Parthenon, Phidias, created a bronze Athena that stood on the Acropolis in Athens. The statue was donated and paid for by a colony of Athenians on the island of Lemnos in the North Aegean shortly after the Athenians settled there in 451 BC. The statue should not be confused with the larger-than-life statue of Athena Parthenos by the same artist, which also stood on the Acropolis.
The plaster cast was made from an ancient Roman marble sculpture (torso) of the lost Greek bronze original. The marble sculpture was probably found in Rome. At the time of discovery it was headless. It is now in the Albertinum Museum in Dresden. The Albertinum acquired the torso from the famous Roman Chigi collection in 1728. This plaster cast of the torso was compared in Dresden with a plaster cast of the so-called “Bolognese head” from the famous Palagi antiquities collection in Bologna: the head of the Lemnian Athena. This addition goes back to Adolf Furtwängler, who combined the torso and head in 1893.
Athena probably stood with a spear in her left hand and a winged victory or libation bowl in her right. It is assumed that she was not wearing a helmet in the original by Phidias, unlike many other Athena sculptures.
The sculpture that we offer in our online shop is produced as a bronze casting using the traditional lost wax technique. The basis for the negative mould required for this is a plaster cast of the Furtwängler reconstruction in Dresden.
We are pleased to offer two exceptional patination options for bronze statues, each rooted in historical authenticity. The first is the classical patina, which beautifully captures the natural weathering of bronze over centuries. This finish has been the preferred choice among connoisseurs ever since the rediscovery of monumental bronzes from antiquity.
However, recent scientific research—most notably a 2022 study of a major ancient bronze, the renowned Charioteer of Delphi—has provided compelling evidence that such works were originally polished in antiquity. These statues likely exhibited a warm, golden lustre, the result of bronze alloys with approximately 10% tin content and meticulous surface treatment.
In light of these findings, we now offer the option of a meticulously reconstructed, polished surface that closely approximates the statues’ supposed original appearance. This allows you to choose between the time-honoured aged patina or a radiant finish evocative of how these masterpieces may once have appeared to visitors at sanctuaries such as Delphi, Olympia, or Delos. Each statue cast by us is engraved in the base with a serial number, date of manufacture and our company logo. The base is engraved with your name, a lettering, the occasion of production, your own company logo or additional engraving as required.
