The marble statue of a running, fleeing young woman, a so-called Niobe, is over 180 centimetres high and is a Roman marble copy of a lost Greek original made of bronze. The Greek original can be dated to 150-101 BC. It may have been part of a group of statues of Niobe and her children. Erected by the Hellenistic ruler Seleucus. Around 38 BC, the statue group was brought to Rome to decorate the Temple of Apollo on the Campus Martius. The statue group was seen and described there by Pliny in the first century AD. The Roman marble copy was found around 1500 in Tivoli, on the grounds of the Villa Adriana (Hadrian’s Villa) and was probably created in Hadrian’s time (before 138 AD). Today, the marble statue is in the Chiaramonti Museum in the Vatican Museums. The head of the statue is in the Uffizi Gallery. Buy this feminine work of art in our online shop as a replica statue. You can order the faithful reproduction as a bronze cast or as a marble cast. We also offer the option of having the headless figure of Chiaramonti Niobid carved from a block of marble by a sculptor.
One of Niobe’s daughters is depicted trying to escape the arrows of Apollo and Artemis. The myth tells how Niobe, Queen of Thebes, had fourteen children, seven boys and seven girls. Proud of her origins and numerous offspring, she presumed to rise above the Titaness Leto, who had only given birth to two children, the twins Apollo and Artemis. Niobe even prevented the twins from being worshipped by the people.
The two gods decide to punish Niobe for insulting her mother and kill all of Niobe’s children with arrows, with Apollo killing the boys and Artemis the girls. The loss drove the parents to their deaths: Amphion committed suicide with a sword; Niobe froze in immense pain. The wind then carried her to Phrygia, to the top of Mount Sipylos. But even there, her tears did not stop flowing. Niobe is finally transformed into marble. Niobe’s seven sons are named Ismenus, Sipylus, Phaedimus, Tantalus, Alphenor, Damasichthon and Ilioneus. The names of the daughters have not been handed down.
The sculpture is produced as a bronze casting using the traditional lost wax technique. The negative mould is based on two plaster casts that were joined to form a statue at the beginning of the 19th century. The body without the head comes from the original Vatican marble statue. The head comes from the original head of the statue from the Florentine Uffizi. The finished bronze sculpture is of museum quality and corresponds to the originals in the Vatican Museum and the Uffizi.
In addition to the classic bronze casting, you can also purchase the replica Chiaramonti Niobid statue in our Online Shop in two further moulds. The marble cast from powdered genuine white marble. And the new moulding of the statue by sculptors from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.
We are pleased to offer two exceptional patination options for bronze statues, each rooted in historical authenticity. The first is the classical patina, which beautifully captures the natural weathering of bronze over centuries. This finish has been the preferred choice among connoisseurs ever since the rediscovery of monumental bronzes from antiquity.
However, recent scientific research—most notably a 2022 study of a major ancient bronze, the renowned Charioteer of Delphi—has provided compelling evidence that such works were originally polished in antiquity. These statues likely exhibited a warm, golden lustre, the result of bronze alloys with approximately 10% tin content and meticulous surface treatment.
In light of these findings, we now offer the option of a meticulously reconstructed, polished surface that closely approximates the statues’ supposed original appearance. This allows you to choose between the time-honoured aged patina or a radiant finish evocative of how these masterpieces may once have appeared to visitors at sanctuaries such as Delphi, Olympia, or Delos.
