Polydeukos or Amykos

Polydeukos, one of the two Dioscuri, defeated the Bebrykian king Amykos in a fistfight on his voyage on the Argo to Colchis. Either of these two experienced pugilists could be depicted.

Dares or Entellus

Dares, an arrogant young pugilist, challenged the ageing Trojan hero Entellus to a fistfight and lost dramatically. One of the two could be depicted. The fight is immortalised in Virgil’s Aeneid.

Theagenes of Thasos

One of the most famous martial artists of ancient Greece. In his career as a pugilist alone, he is said to have remained undefeated for 22 years.

Historical significance

The Boxer at Rest is one of only nine large Greek bronzes preserved in the original. This gives it elementary, unique significance. In this bronze statue we see the radiant light of ancient Greece, unmediated, unadulterated and with great emotional impact. The other eight original Greek bronze statues that have been preserved are the Charioteer of Delphi, the Hellenistic Prince, the Artemision Bronze, the Jockey of Artemision, the Riace Bronze A and Riace Bronze B, the Marathon Boy and the Croatian Apoxyomenos.

The sculpture you buy from us is produced as a bronze casting using the traditional lost wax technique. The negative mould required for this is based on a plaster cast of the statue in the cast collection of the University of Cambridge, as well as a photogrammetry of the original in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme in Rome. The finished bronze sculpture is of museum quality and corresponds to the original in Rome down to the smallest detail.

This finish has been the preferred choice among connoisseurs ever since the rediscovery of monumental bronzes from antiquity.

However, recent scientific research—most notably a 2022 study of a major ancient bronze, the renowned Charioteer of Delphi—has provided compelling evidence that such works were originally polished in antiquity. These statues likely exhibited a warm, golden lustre, the result of bronze alloys with approximately 10% tin content and meticulous surface treatment.

In light of these findings, we now offer the option of a meticulously reconstructed, polished surface that closely approximates the statues’ supposed original appearance. This allows you to choose between the time-honoured aged patina or a radiant finish evocative of how these masterpieces may once have appeared to visitors at sanctuaries such as Delphi, Olympia, or Delos. Each statue cast by us is engraved in the base with a serial number, date of manufacture and our company logo. The base is also engraved with your name, a lettering, the occasion of production, your own company logo or additional engraving as required.
