Statue of Apollo made of Pentelic marble. Found in Athens in the theatre of Dionysus, known as Apollo Omphalos. The statue was named after its pedestal in the shape of the Omphalos of Delphi on which it had originally stood. This Roman work from the 2nd century AD copies a bronze original from the period 460-450 BC, probably created by Kalamis, a sculptor of the austere style. This original statue is no longer preserved, but more than twenty marble copies are known, which are recognisable as such due to their great similarity to each other.
According to mythology, the Omphalos of Delphi was a stone covered with a net that served to mark the centre of the world. There are many copies of it. In the 19th century, a plaster cast of the Delphi Omphalos was combined with the plaster cast of the statue found in Athens for the statue on offer here. The statue itself is now on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, but without the omphalos. This is on display in Delphi.
Apollo’s weight rests on the right leg. The left leg is pulled back slightly and is held away from the body. The slight outward projection of the right hip is balanced by the outward movement of the arms. The figure’s head is tilted to the right and shows the long, oval-shaped face of the god. The god’s large, deep-set eyes and soft, full lips dominate his face. His head is crowned by a mass of hair that falls in orderly curls onto his forehead. A thin, double plait of hair runs around his head.
In our online shop, you can buy the Apollo Omphalos statue not only as a cast bronze replica. We also offer the options of marble casting and recasting for the life-size replica statue.
In addition to the classic bronze casting, we also offer two other moulds for the statues shown here. Marble casting from powdered genuine white marble. And the new moulding of the statue by sculptors from a single block of white marble. If you are interested in such a mould, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your e-mail or phone call.
Patination marks the final step in the finishing process of a bronze statue. The patina simulates the natural oxidation process that causes the bronze to weather differently over time, depending on the environmental influences on the copper alloy. We have various patina recipes in our repertoire, including one that corresponds well to the patina of preserved antique bronze statues. We will be happy to provide you with samples of the patina in question prior to purchase.
Each statue cast by us is engraved in the base with a serial number, date of manufacture and our company logo. The base is also engraved with your name, a lettering, the occasion of production, your own company logo or additional engraving as required.
