Zeus Ammon – buy the bronze or marble replica bust in real size
After the Greeks colonised Cyrenaica – now part of Libya – and also established settlements in the lower Nile Delta, they associated Zeus with the Egyptian god Amun-Ra, who was often depicted with the head of a ram. The features of both deities are combined in this marble bust.
The worship of Amun, who was called Ammon by the Greeks, also spread to the north of the Greek peninsula, where statues and temples were erected in Delphi, Sparta, Thebes, Aphytis and Megalopolis. The poet Pindar wrote a hymn to Ammon, which is engraved on a triangular column in Thebes. In Thebes, Ammon became the most important local deity.
The Roman marble version of the bust can be found in the Munich State Collection of Classical Antiquities on Königsplatz. It is a copy of a lost Greek bronze original from the late 5th century B.C. The replica offered here is based on a plaster cast of the Roman marble copy from the Munich Collection of Classical Antiquities.
